About Us
Johnson's Orchards, established in 1918 by James Elmo Johnson and his dad Robert Johnson in the area of property that had been in the family since the 1750s. Nancy and Danny have been operating the farm since the middle 60as. Now the 4th and 5th generations are doing the work, with the 6th not far behind.
In 1995 the Johnsons considered making wine from the fruits they were growing. More and more Virginia Wineries were being established and were attracting an increasing number of visitors. The commercial apple business was in decline and the Johnsons felt that the addition of a winery would also be a way of selling more of their fruits directly to consumers.
There are over 100 different varieties of apples planted. A 15 ft Johnny Appleseed overlooks the area.
We are located in Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia at the foot of the Peaks of Otter. We are 8 miles from the Blue ridge Parkway and the National D-day Memorial. Although we grow many fruits for our wine, apples are our main crop. You may pick fruit fresh from the tree in the fall or select apples, peaches, nectarines, plums from our bins. This way you can taste the fruit that our wines are made from. We also make our fruits into cider and butters. We also do school field trips. We are open weekends January through March noon to 5 and daily April through December, noon to 5, and the rest of the time by special events chance or appointment
