BALTIMORE, MD May 16, 2014 - The 2014 Farm Credit MarketMaker Innovation Awards were announced at the sixteenth annual National Value Added Agriculture Conference held May 13-15 at the Holiday Inn Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel. This presentation celebrates outstanding efforts to improve state-wide MarketMaker programs and expand MarketMakers online database of food industry and market data through the National MarketMaker Partners Network. Farm Credit sponsored the event and contributed incentive cash rewards for the winner and runners-up to use to advance their state MarketMaker programs.
Gary Matteson, Vice President of Young, Beginning, Small Farmer Programs and Outreach, represented Farm Credit at the awards and acknowledged the ingenuity of each program.
We are pleased to support and recognize the worthy efforts of this years Innovation Award winners, said Matteson. It is gratifying to see their good ideas brought to life and spread among other members of the MarketMaker community. Their contributions are helping MarketMaker accomplish their goals to connect producers to markets and improve consumers access to fresh, healthy, local foods.
New York MarketMaker took the top honors this year with the initiative titled Increasing Healthy Food Access in Underserved Communities by using New York MarketMaker. The program supported faith based food hubs to successfully connect producers of fresh healthy foods to urban neighborhoods.
Georgia MarketMaker took first runner up for their program, Farm to Food Bank Pilot. In cooperation with Feeding America and the Georgia Food Bank Association, Georgia MarketMaker tested an online food donation platform that connects local agriculturists to the member food banks, allowing them to easily donate surplus product to those most in need.
Award for second runner up went to Ohio MarketMaker for their program, Expanding MarketMaker Visibility, Value and Usage by Reaching Local Communities through Local Ohio State University Extension Educators. Due to general unfamiliarity in the state, Ohio MarketMaker aimed to increase awareness and spread knowledge about the advantages of the tool. Their program sought to engage and support the efforts of local extension educators through a marketing campaign, which successfully increased visibility and usage of Ohio MarketMaker.
Iowa MarketMaker was named third runner up for their program, MarketMaker [Affiliates] Widget Program to Build Food Industry Partnerships, which focused on linking the Regional Food Systems Working Group of Iowa to the MarketMaker database. This program improved visibility and usage for Iowa MarketMaker, while supporting community involvement and serving about 1,500 farmers across 92 counties in the state.
